About the EcologyGuy

Long, long ago…in a college far, far away…

dr dennis clark at greenearthnewsblog.comOkay, it wasn’t so long ago (the 1960s) and it wasn’t so far away (Sacramento State College). That was when I encountered one of the most amazing professors that I ever met in college, Prof. Marda West. She piqued my interest in studying ecology and was the driving influence behind me reading such classic books as Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, The Frail Ocean by Wesley Marx, and The Population Bomb by Paul Ehrlich.

Under her mentoring, I started my research career in what has come to be known as plant physiological ecology. This interest morphed into plant biochemistry and, eventually, into me following in Dr. West’s footsteps as a professor.

The times they are a-changin’ (so I’ve heard), Dr. West has passed on, and I have retired as a research scientist and university professor.

All aspects of ecology remain the most fascinating subject matter that I read about. In my opinion, we have always had good reason to live what is now referred to as a green lifestyle.

Nowdays, as predicted in the 1960s, we Earthlings are faced with a greater need than ever for living green. Ideally, if we could be like an environmentally tuned-in backpacker hiking through life … that is, taking only photographs and leaving only footprints … we and our entire planet would be a better place.

The truth of the matter is that economic forces are driving the greening of society. We now have green businesses, green chambers of commerce, green products for home and industry, green everything that you can imagine (and more).

I welcome this development, whatever the reason. However, I keep an eye on the foibles of humanity. Some of the “greenness” is great and truly important, some of it is hogwash, and some of it is plain old dishonest crap.

This is where I hope that my commentary and views, as an old ecologist from way back, will be helpful for visitors here who are seeking some honesty and truth about the re-greening of the only planet that we’ve got.

Some Professional Stuff

Oh, that professional background that I alluded to above is summarized more fully at my blog on herbal medicine, which is at HerbScientist.com. As you might guess, I am the HerbScientist, and my “Who Is The HerbScientist?” page provides all the boring details about me that you could possibly be interested in.

Thanks for your interest!
